For the past 4 years my family has been proudly participating (alongside the Hemophilia Foundation of Northern California) in the National Hemophilia Foundations' Hemophilia Walk. Every $1,000 raised sends a child to Camp Hemotion, which Scarlett would be attending for the first time over the summer. Each year our friends and family have come to support us and each year our group has gotten bigger. I'm truly grateful for all my friends and family that came to support us and hope we can continue this annual tradition.
This year I was also granted the opportunity to plan and take charge of the kids area. An area of our small local walk that needed some improvements and now had a willing candidate to take it on. I had been on the phone, emailing and staying in contact with other members of the walk committee for several months, so the excitement leading up to the day seemed to succeed all other walks.
We were up bright and early, leaving the house by 6:30 am so we could arrive by 7:30 in time to set up. The walk would be located along side the beatiful Lake Merrit again this year in Oakland, California. It was a gorgeous morning. Not too hot . . not too cold. . . the perfect day for a 5K in support of the bleeding disorder community. By 8am we were all set up and ready for the jumpy house to get there while eagerly awaiting our first group of guests to arrive.
With the help of Scarlett and Walker I was able to come up with some cheap and easy ways to keep the children entertained in a safe and friendly environment. We had tattoos and shirt decorating. A jumpy house maze. The children could make signs to hold and also had a BINGO game available to play while on the walk. And to my surprise. . . the favorite ended up being the shaving cream tables.
Some areas were a total success, others I would do a little bit differently next year, but all in all I definitely think the kids enjoyed the area. I was fortunate enough to have my female factor ladies there to help be in charge of the tables and it all ran quite smoothly.
By 10 o'clock all our friends had arrived and we were ready for the walk. We were one of the last groups to leave and we were definitely in no hurry. We meandered slowly around the lake, while the kids seeked out all the items on their BINGO card.
I was able to catch up with all my friends and we were around the lake before we knew it. I only ended up holding my 5 year old for a small portion of the way and I was astounded with how well all our little ones did.
Once we got back from the walk, everyone enjoyed a picnic in the park while watching the kids run and play. It was a GREAT DAY and I'm anxious to see who comes to join us next year.
